Child Support
Maryland
child support lawyer
Child support in
Maryland is established using
state-mandated guidelines.
Because of this, it is important to identify all
sources of income so they can be included in the
calculations. The child support guidelines take into
account the parents’ gross income, the number of
children, the costs of providing children medical
insurance and childcare, alimony received or paid,
children’s extraordinary medical expenses and other
expenses such as private school costs and related
transportation. While there is a presumption that
the child support determined with the Maryland child
support guidelines is an appropriate amount, there
are circumstances under which the court may deviate
from the guidelines. To learn more about child
support calculations, contact me, Steven M. Weisbaum,
Esq., at my Rockville law firm, The Weisbaum Law
Firm.
Modifications of a
child support order are possible
When circumstances
change, modifications of child support orders are
possible. Factors that may be considered by the
court in determining whether to modify child support
include a parent’s injury or disability, a
significant increase or decrease in a parent’s
income, if a child incurs an unusual medical expense
that did not exist at the time of the original award
such as orthodontics, or some other material change
in circumstance bearing on the calculation of child
support. I can assess and seek a modification in an
existing child support award if the circumstances
warrant.
